A Different Sort of Foe: Khorne & Nurgle

So you guys think I like to have pretentious names for bundles of articles that are similar, and then claim they're a series- you are entirely correct. A Different Sort of Foe is a series where I post lists, either by request or unsolicited, but mostly the former.

Today we have a request by Ron_Fury, of a Khorne/Nurgle army. Now I don't normally write themed Daemon lists: it's like writing a Grey Knights list with nothing but purifiers, rhinos, crowe and a couple psyfledrea- oh. That list works. Bad analogy. Well... It's like making a space marine list with only things that have 2 "A"'s in the name- you arbitrarily cut yourself off from a bunch of good units.

However, Khorne-Nurgle sounds just crazy enough to work! Let's try it!

Here, the inabilty to put different independent characters together is sort of annoying- I wanted to put a Herald of Khorne with the plaguebearers.

Use the Phelgms, Tongues, and autocannons to crack open transports, one at a time. Any infantry out of a vehicle will be severely punished by the bloodcrushers and Great Unclean ones, who, you may have noticed, have non-ignorable anti-tank ability.

The horrific mass of 3 soul Grinders, 2 Great Unclean Ones, 3 5-man squads of bloodcrushers, 2 blight drones and 2 squads of plaguebearers will horribly confuse the target priority of all but the most focused player. Multiplicity of Target Syndrome at it's finest.
Protip, kill the Soul Grinders first.

If you can't use Forge World, drop the blight drones and instrument from one squad of plaguebearers, add 1 plaguebearer to the small squad, and bring all the bloodcrusher squads up to 7-strong.
Don't nobody say a word about sacred numbers.

  1. Thanks for this post, this list I can use as a starting point. I don't have Blight Drones so I'll swap around a bit as you suggest. Might try for more Plagebearer squads. For my army I will have to swap two Soul Grinders for Deamon Princes, maybe one of Nergal and one of Khrone (even if he's not exactly worth it). Thanks again.

    1. You know my opinion of khorne daemon princes (nurgle is tougher and killier), and if you lose the soul grinders and the blight drones... you're running pretty low on reliable anti-tank. Just a suggestion.
I'm glad you found it helpful!

  2. Very good advice and quite a nasty list. Target oversaturation is, as always, the daemon's best friend.
Lorewise this also works very well, considering that Khorne and Nurgle value very similar ideals: Camaraderie, dedication and fortitude.
On the tabletop I find those to be very solid, only eclipsed by an Epidemus list, though I have irrational fear of Epidemus, so don't take my word for that.
Curiously, I literally cannot NOT build themed armies, even my nastiest tournament army, the dreadpod swarm, has an extensive background and a running theme.
The fact that my Emperor's Children and Deathguard are running in squads of six and seven respectivly probably means I should shut up now.

    1. Oh, don't get me wrong: I made a backstory for my army, the Phasmae Noctis (loose latin for "The Phantoms in the Night), and I specifically shun slaanesh: initially, because my playstyle doesn't like how fragile they are, but it also grew to be a backstory thing.

    2. It's mostly because I like to drop stuff close, which requires durable units and renders speed redundant: I'll probably expand on this in a later post.
